Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin that has been standing in for real copy since the sixteenth century, when a printer reportedly cut up a passage of Cicero to make a type specimen. It survives because it looks like language without being readable as one: the word lengths and letter distribution approximate Latin-script prose closely enough to judge a layout, while carrying no meaning to distract the eye.
That is precisely the argument for and against it. Placeholder text lets you evaluate typography, measure and rhythm before the copy exists, but it also lets a design pass review with text that will never fit the real thing. Use it to test how a layout breathes, and replace it with genuine copy before anyone signs anything off.

Does lorem ipsum mean anything?
Not as written. It derives from Cicero’s De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, but the passage has been cut, shuffled and had words altered until it is no longer coherent Latin. Individual words retain meanings — dolor is pain, ipsum is itself — but the text as a whole says nothing.
Why not just use real text, or repeat one word?
Repeating a single word gives an unnaturally regular texture, so line breaks and ragged edges do not behave the way real copy will. Real text from elsewhere brings its own problem: reviewers read it and comment on the content instead of the design. Lorem ipsum sits deliberately between the two.
Is placeholder text bad for SEO?
Only if it ships. A published page of lorem ipsum is a page with no meaningful content, which is worse than a short page of real content. It happens more often than you would think — search for the phrase and you will find live production sites.
Does lorem ipsum work for testing non-Latin layouts?
No, and this is a real trap. Latin placeholder tells you nothing about how a layout copes with Arabic right-to-left flow, with the line-breaking rules of Japanese, or with the greater average word length of German. Test those with sample text in the actual script.
How much text should I generate?
Match the real thing as closely as you can estimate, then generate a second version at roughly double the length. Designs usually fail at the extremes rather than at the intended size, and the overflow case is the one that reaches production untested.
